192 yards along the top of a cliff, and the reason nobody talks about the golf here is standing in the bay below you. The hole itself is straightforward enough. A long iron along the headland to a green on a grassy promontory, one bunker, closely mown grass running to the edge where the ground stops. What makes it unplayable in any real sense is what is happening underneath. When the swell arrives, a single wall of dark green water rears up out of the bay and stands two thirds of the way up a cliff that is already high enough to make you careful near the edge. There is a stone fort with a squat lighthouse out on the point, and the wave behind it makes it look like something off a model railway. That is how you know what you are looking at. The wind here is offshore and it holds the wave up, tearing long white plumes backwards off the crest before it breaks, and the water in front of it is already white from the one before. Nobody has ever hit a shot on this hole thinking about the shot. You stand on the tee waiting for the next set, and then you remember you are meant to be playing golf. A cut stone path with a low parapet runs out along the clifftop to the back of the green, which is the only way on and off, and on a big day you would not want to be halfway along it. Take one more club than the number, because the wind that is holding those waves up is in your face, and aim at the middle. Nothing about this hole rewards ambition.
