Same system, every age

A junior handicap is a real handicap.

The same official system

WHS has no separate formula for juniors. Your child's Handicap Index is worked out exactly like an adult's, from the best 8 of their last 20 rounds. A junior handicap is a real handicap.

Calculated from the tees they play

Juniors earn a handicap by playing the forward tees, and we use those tees' Course Rating and Slope to work it out. Play the reds, yellows, or forward tees and the number comes out right.

Room to grow

The maximum Handicap Index is 54.0 for everyone, so brand new junior golfers are covered from their very first rounds, and the number tumbles as they improve.

The right tees

It works on the tees they play.

Pick your course from our directory of more than 24,000 courses, choose the tee your junior is on, and we work out their handicap from that tee's Course Rating and Slope. Wherever the forward tees are rated, we use them. No spreadsheets, no guesswork.

Can't find your junior's tees?

If your course's forward or junior tee box isn't in the app yet, tell us the course and the tee and we'll add the ratings.

Junior handicap questions.

Can a child have a golf handicap?

Yes. The World Handicap System works for all ages with no minimum. A junior earns a Handicap Index the same way an adult does, by posting acceptable scores from a rated set of tees.

Which tees should a junior play for a handicap?

A rated set, usually the forward, red, or yellow tees. Those tees carry their own Course Rating and Slope, which is what makes a score count. Very short, unrated junior layouts cannot be used for handicap.

Is a junior handicap different from an adult one?

No. It is the same Handicap Index on the same 54.0 scale, fully comparable to every other golfer in the world. The only difference is the tees your child plays, which the system already accounts for.
