110 yards, and there is a hole in the ground between you and the green that fires seawater a hundred feet into the air. The shot itself is nothing, a smooth wedge to a green sitting on a raised platform of dark rock. What makes it is the blowhole punched clean through the shelf directly on your line, breathing every time a swell drives into the rock beneath it. Time it wrong and you are hitting through a wall of spray with no idea where the ball has gone. Time it right and it is the easiest shot on the card. Nothing else about the hole is subtle either. The whole shelf is wet, scoured rock, the sea breaks white against its outer edge and washes across it in sheets, and the green sits above all of it with one bunker and mown grass running to the edge. There is no bail out, because everything that is not green is either bare rock or the Atlantic. The stone path with its iron handrail skirting the blowhole is the only way round to the back of the green, and you would not want to be walking it when a big one comes through. Wait for the blowhole to breathe, hit it while the spray is falling, and take enough club that a bit of wet air does not cost you the green.
