The tee sits on a shelf of golden limestone on one arm of a bay, and there is nothing in front of it but open sea until the fairway begins on the clifftop opposite. You can see the whole problem from where you stand, which is the worst part. There is no angle to take it on from, no shorter line to nibble at, no bunker to aim away from. Either the ball reaches the far side or it does not, and the sea gives nothing back. The safe play is real but expensive: the land runs round the head of the bay and the cart path follows it, so you can play out to the right and walk the long way, and by the time you get there you have used two shots to reach a place the tee shot could have put you in one. That turns a par 4 into most of a par 5. What catches people out is the wind, because it comes off the water and it is nearly always into you on this tee, and 240 into a breeze is not the 240 you practised. Take enough club, aim at the middle of the fairway rather than the flag, and accept that laying up here is not cowardice, it is arithmetic.
