The Chalk

Par 3 · 130 yards

130 yards, which is a comfortable club for almost everybody, and that is the entire trick of this hole. The green is not on top of the cliff and it is not at the bottom of it. It sits on a narrow natural shelf about halfway down eight hundred feet of white chalk, so there is a wall of rock rising behind the flag and several hundred feet of nothing at all beneath it, falling to a beach of pale boulders and the sea. The putting surface fills the shelf and is mown right to the edge, where the ground simply stops. There is no rough to hack out of, no bank to feed a ball back, and nothing to take a drop from. The path in is a bare ledge cut across the face with no wall, no parapet and no railing on it, which tells you everything about how the hole is meant to feel. Two things undo people here and neither is the yardage. The first is that a cliff like this generates its own updraught, so a ball thrown up into the air over the edge gets held and comes up short, and the honest play is a flighted shot that stays low rather than a high soft one. The second is simply nerve. A 130 yard shot is one most golfers hit without a thought off a range mat, and the same swing becomes very hard to make when the consequence of catching it thin is watching the ball fall for four seconds. Pick the club, aim at the middle of the shelf, and make the swing you would make anywhere else.

This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.

This one is make-believe. The thousands of courses in the app are not.
