Everything that misses goes over the edge and down the columns to the surf and the boulders at the bottom. There is no bail out, no chip back on, no second attempt from anywhere sensible. It is only a short iron, which is exactly what makes it cruel, because the shot is easy and the consequence is absolute. Take one more club than the number says, aim at the middle of the green, and do not look down until it has landed.
