The Falls Edge

145 yards across the top of a waterfall. A river runs over this clifftop and goes straight off the edge in one clean white fall, dropping the full height of the cliff into the Atlantic, and the hole is played across the gap where it goes over. Tee on one side, green on the other, and the fall directly between them. The turf up here is the vivid emerald you only get this far north, laid over black basalt that drops sheer to the water beneath both the tee and the green, and the swell comes in and breaks white on the rocks a long way down. Low cloud usually sits on the dark green peaks behind. The green has one bunker and closely mown grass running out to the cliff edge past it. Getting there is the part people do not expect: the path runs back from the tee along the clifftop, crosses the river well upstream on a plain stone slab bridge, and comes back down the far side, so a shot that takes three seconds to play takes a quarter of an hour to walk. The shot itself is a mid iron and the carry is not the problem, because the gap is far narrower than the yardage. The problem is the wind, which comes up the face of the cliff and over the lip in exactly the place your ball wants to be, and the spray drifting off the fall that makes the green look further away than it is. Take one more club than the number and aim at the middle. Anything leaked toward the fall is gone, and there is no drop zone on the far side.

This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.

This one is make-believe. The thousands of courses in the app are not.
