The tee is a wide deck of thick laminated glass bolted out from the face of a sandstone pillar, open at the front, glass balustrades either side, and nothing under your feet but clear panels and a long way down to the forest. The only things on it that are not glass are two small squares of tee turf in steel trays, one for right handers and one for left handers. Across the gap the neighbouring pillar has been planed flat and turned into a green, with one bunker cut into the front and the rock falling away sheer on every side, and a glass sided footbridge runs across to it off to the right of the line. There is no front edge to land short on and nowhere to miss that the ball comes back from. The difficulty on a hole like this is almost never the number. It is that looking down changes how you stand over the ball: people shorten their backswing, grip tighter and hurry the transition because some part of them wants the shot to be over. The cure is to make your practice swing looking at the green rather than the glass, take one more club than the yardage so you can swing easily, and commit to the middle of the green rather than the flag. A smooth swing with too much club lands safely. A careful one with exactly the right club lands in the trees.
