252 yards, and the scorecard is the only place this says three. That is longer than most people hit a driver, and the first thing to be honest about on the tee is whether you are one of them. The hole runs along the top of a golden sandstone headland with the whole harbour opening out beyond it, a city skyline across the water, a bridge on the right and the white shells of the opera house on the point below it. The green sits out near the cliff edge with one bunker at the front. Left of it the ground is open, mown and happy to take a running shot. Right of it is a weathered sandstone edge, then a rock platform, then the sea. So the question is not really can you reach. It is where do you want to be playing your second from. Anybody who takes driver and flushes it has a putt at two, and everybody else has a choice between a heroic miss and a sensible one. The sensible one is to aim at the short left ground, leave a simple pitch, and take four without ever being in trouble. There is a second thing working against you here and it is the view. A skyline that big pulls your eye up and off the target line, and the breeze coming across open water is doing considerably more than it feels like it is on the tee. Pick the club that keeps you left of the flag, and take your four happily.
