The tee is a platform of mown turf laid on the start gate at the very top of the inrun tower, where the jumpers sit, and the shot is played straight down the line of the jump. The concrete ramp plunges away from your feet with its steel guide rails running down both sides, the landing hill falls away beyond it as a broad steep slope of mown turf, and the ground finally flattens into the outrun arena where the green sits with two bunkers and a single flag, ringed by tiered concrete terraces that are empty out of season. A cart path switchbacks down the flank of the hill in tight zigzags, which is the only thing in the picture that tells you honestly how far down it is. The first snow of the year is settling as you play, caught along the rails and on the flat tops of the terraces, lying in a pale film across the green while the grass still shows green underneath it. What makes this hole is that nobody agrees on the club. A ball struck from a tee this far above the green hangs in the air far longer, so it carries much further than the number suggests, but it also comes down steeply and stops almost where it lands. Take the yardage off the card, take several clubs less rather than one, and aim at the middle of the green rather than the flag, because looking down a slope this steep makes everything read closer than it is. Short is the ramp, and a ball that finishes on concrete is not a ball you play again.
