215 yards, and the shot everyone plays is the one that kills them. It runs steeply downhill off a ridge tee and across the gorge, so it plays more like 190, and the difficulty is that standing up there looking into all that space, 190 feels like far too much club. So people take less, and less is the one thing this hole will not forgive. The apron in front of the green is a strip of mown grass about fifteen paces wide and then the ground goes over the lip and drops a few hundred feet to the river. Short does not leave you a chip. Short leaves you nothing at all. Long is the safe miss and almost nobody takes it, because it feels wrong to aim past a flag on a hole this exposed. There is a mown bank rising behind the green into the jungle, and a ball into that bank stops and sits up, leaving an ordinary chip back downhill to a flag you can see. There are two bunkers as well, a small one short left and a bigger one front right, and both are better than what lies underneath them. Take the sand, take the bank, take anything except the front edge. Play the 190, aim at the middle of the green and let it finish long. Cloud sits down inside the gorge most of the morning, the river runs white over the boulders at the bottom of it, and the whole thing is quiet apart from the water.
