The tee sits on open mown fairway, the green is a broad circle of closely cut turf with one red flag, and between the two lies a formal yew maze that fills the whole walled garden. There is a single gap cut in the near hedge, a worn line in the grass leading up to it, and after that the walls are well above head height and the flag disappears. What makes it interesting is not the shot, which is a three quarter wedge anyone reading this could hit, but what happens next. Miss the green and the ball is somewhere in a hedge maze, and finding it is a different sport. Even a good one leaves you walking in blind, because once you are between the walls there is no sightline to the pin and no way to line yourself up. The sensible play is to take one more club than the yardage asks for and aim at the fattest part of the circle, because the difference between twenty feet and forty feet matters far less here than the difference between being on the putting surface and being in the hedge. Hole it and you can go home. Miss it and you may be a while.
