340 yards, and the number is the trap. It is short enough that everybody standing on the tee is thinking about getting near the green, and the ground could not care less what they are thinking. The hole runs out along a finger of land barely wider than the fairway, with a ravine falling away on each side to a shoreline of boulders and white water a few hundred feet below, and the green sits right at the tip with open ocean round three sides of it. What makes it a proper hole rather than just a frightening one is the shape of the short grass. The fairway is at its widest about two hundred yards out and it narrows steadily from there, so the harder you hit it the less there is to land on. And the miss here is not rough. There is nothing to hack out of, nothing to take a drop from, and no shot back up. It is simply gone, and so is the ball. Then there is the wind, which is the part nobody allows for. You tee off in the shelter of the rise behind you, so the crosswind coming in off open water feels like nothing at all, and then the ball climbs out of that shelter and gets the full weight of it. The question on a hole like this is never whether you can reach. It is where the hole is narrowest and whether you are landing in the wide part or the thin part. An iron and a full wedge from the broadest ground you can find beats a driver and a long look over the edge, almost every time.
