159 yards across a reservoir, and nobody who plays it is looking at the green. Between the tee and the far bank stands a bellmouth overflow, a ring of concrete perhaps thirty metres across rising just clear of the water, and the entire reservoir is going over its rim in one unbroken sheet and falling away down the shaft inside. You can hear it before you can see it properly. A slim steel walkway runs out to it from the bank so it can be inspected, which is the detail that tells you this thing is real and not decoration. The green sits on a grassy promontory on the far side, closely mown, one bunker short left, with the cart path curling round behind it. The shot is a mid iron over flat calm water with no wind to speak of, which on any other hole would make it the easiest tee shot of the day. The problem is that a golf ball is exactly the sort of object that overflow was built to swallow, and once you have had that thought you cannot unthink it. Aim at the middle, take the club that gets you comfortably to the back half, and do not walk out onto the walkway before you play, because looking down the shaft is not a thing you can undo.
