The Stack

Par 3 · 178 yards

178 yards, and nowhere to miss it. The green sits on the flat top of a sea stack that rises straight out of the Atlantic, and the only way onto it is a footbridge from the mainland, which is also the only way off. There is no apron to run up, no bank to feed a ball back, no rough to hack out of. The turf simply stops and the rock goes down a couple of hundred feet to the surf. What ruins people here is not the yardage, it is the steering. A green with nothing around it makes you grip tighter and ease off through impact, and a steered iron leaks right almost every time. The fix is a smaller target rather than a bigger one. Pick a specific point on the putting surface rather than aiming vaguely at the green, and make a normal committed swing at it. A committed shot at the middle finishes closer than a careful one at the flag, every time. Then take one more club than the number says, because it is into the breeze off the sea and short is wet. And if you find yourself walking the bridge back with a card you would rather not talk about, look down at the rocks on the way. You will not be the first thing to have gone over the edge here.

This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.

This one is make-believe. The thousands of courses in the app are not.
