The Underworld

147 yards. A nine iron for most people, and there is a hole in the world in between. The green sits on the far rim of a limestone sinkhole with one bunker cut into it, and from the tee you are looking straight across the mouth of the thing: pale undercut rock hung with vines and hanging roots, dropping a couple of hundred feet to still black water that never sees direct sun. The Maya believed cenotes like this were the entrances to the underworld, which is where the hole gets its name and roughly how it feels standing on the tee. There is a timber walkway round the rim, so you can get there, it just takes a while. What makes a short shot hard here is that you cannot see the bottom of anything. Your eye has no ground between you and the target to measure against, so the green reads closer than it is, and the miss is always short. Take the club the number says, commit to it, and do not peer over the edge first.

This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.

This one is make-believe. The thousands of courses in the app are not.
