The Wall

Par 3 · 138 yards

138 yards downhill, with a wall along the left that has been there for five hundred years. The tee sits high on the shoulder of the ridge, so you look down onto the whole hole at once: a green below you, one bunker on its right, and an old stone rampart running tight along the left edge of the mown ground, past the green and away over the next ridge with a square watchtower standing on it. There is no gap between the wall and the putting surface, and the ground beyond the green falls away toward the next hole, which follows the same line, and the one after that, so the whole course reads as a strip of turf laid alongside something far older than golf. Nobody plays at the wall and nothing is hit over it. The hole runs parallel to it, and the wall is simply the left hand boundary of the world. Downhill short irons are misjudged more often than any other shot in golf, because the ball flies further than the yardage says and the wind up on an exposed ridge is rarely doing what it appears to be doing at ground level. The right play is to take less club than the number, aim at the middle of the green rather than the flag, and accept that the safe miss is right, away from the stone. Long is a pitch back. Left is a story you tell for years.

This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.

This one is make-believe. The thousands of courses in the app are not.
