The green sits on the flat top of a rock buttress about sixty feet above the tee, right in the middle of a cataract, and the river arrives at that rock, splits, and falls down both sides of it in two separate waterfalls that rejoin in the pool below. From the tee all you get is a thin bright line of turf at the front lip and the flag standing above it. No putting surface, no idea what is behind the pin, and no walk up to look, because everything between you and it is wet black rock and falling water. Three things all push the same way and all of them make you come up short. It is steeply uphill, which everybody underclubs. The air in a gorge like this is thick with spray, so the ball does not carry. And the shot is blind, which makes people decelerate without knowing they are doing it. Add two clubs, not one. The other trap is the pin. There is nothing behind that green except sky and the top half of the falls, so a flag near the back looks reachable and is not, and the penalty for being a yard long is the same as being ten yards short. Aim at the front half, take enough club to be sure of carrying the lip, and be honest that a four here is a fine score and a five is not a disgrace.
