122 yards across a hill farm, and today it plays about four hours. The hole itself is a simple one: a short iron from a tee cut into a shelf of pasture, over mown ground that runs level for a hundred yards, to a green set in a natural bowl with a bunker on each side and the fells closing round behind it. A dry stone wall runs up the left with a five bar gate in it, and a clean gravel path runs up the right with another wall alongside. Everything inside the mown lines is kept to championship standard, and everything outside it is rushes, bracken and wet grey stone, because this is still somebody’s farm and the golf is a guest on it. The complication is standing in the middle of the fairway. A herd has come through the open gate, wandered out onto the turf and stopped, and the muddy track of hoof prints leading from the gateway tells you exactly how they got there. The drover is by the gate with his stick and he has run out of ideas. You cannot play through cattle, so the honest answer is that you wait. When you do finally hit it, the thing that beats people is the bowl: ground rising on both sides of a green makes the target look far closer than the card says, because the eye measures against the slope behind rather than the flat in front, and almost everybody comes up short. Take enough club to reach the back half and aim at the middle. The cattle will move when they are ready and not before.
This hole is not real. Like every hole in the collection it was conjured with AI, a golf daydream rather than a course you can go and play. The thousands of courses in the Golf Handicapp app, however, are very real.
