The short answer
Only about 1 in 4 golfers regularly break 90, and nearly half never break 100. Just 1 in 20 break 80, and only 1 in 100 break 70. Wherever you sit, the milestones are rarer than they feel, so give yourself some credit and pick the next one as your target.
Every golfer measures themselves against a round number, breaking 100, then 90, then 80. They feel routine when you are chasing them and impossible once you slip back. Here is how rare each one actually is across all golfers, so you can see exactly where your scores put you, and how big a step the next milestone really is.

How many golfers break each score
Read it as the share of golfers who regularly break that number, not just once on their best ever day. The steps get much steeper the lower you go.
| Score | Golfers who regularly do it |
|---|---|
| Break 100 | 55% |
| Break 90 | 25% |
| Break 80 | 5% |
| Break 70 | 1% |
The milestones are rarer than they feel
Nearly half of all golfers never break 100, and only a quarter regularly break 90. So if you are shooting in the 80s, you are already better than roughly three in four players. Breaking 80 drops to one in 20, and breaking 70 to one in 100. Each milestone is not a small step up from the last, it is a different level of the game.
Picking your next target
The jump from one milestone to the next is mostly about giving away fewer big numbers, not adding birdies. Cutting out lost balls, three-putts and blow-up holes is what moves a 95 to an 88. That is why the fastest gains usually come from the short game and course management rather than the range, the same lesson as where golfers actually lose their shots.

What it means for your handicap
Regularly breaking 90 usually means a handicap somewhere in the mid to high teens, and breaking 80 a single figure. If you want to know exactly where you sit, the cleanest way is to post your rounds and let the maths do the work. You can check your number any time with our WHS handicap calculator and read what counts as a good golf handicap.
Common questions
What percentage of golfers break 90?+
About 25%, so roughly one in four golfers regularly shoots in the 80s or better. Breaking 90 consistently puts you comfortably in the better half of all golfers and usually means a handicap somewhere in the high teens or lower.
What percentage of golfers break 100?+
Around 55%, so a little over half of golfers regularly break 100. That also means nearly half never do, which is worth remembering the next time you post a number in triple figures.
What percentage of golfers break 80?+
Only about 5%, or one in 20. Regularly shooting in the 70s is genuinely rare and typically means a single-figure handicap. Breaking 70 is rarer still, at roughly 1%.
Is breaking 90 a good golf score?+
Yes. If you regularly break 90 you are better than about three quarters of golfers. It is a milestone worth being proud of, and a sensible next target for anyone who has started breaking 100 consistently.
